Coaching Staff
Communication is the key. The most successful programs and teams all share this trait. The athlete, parent/guardians, coaches, and athletic department all have to be on the same page. The goal of these rules and regulations is not to create a cumbersome problem for any athlete or family, they are designed to hold each athlete accountable for his/her role within the team, promote equality and just expectations for all members of the program. If any athlete and parent feel they wish to discuss these rulings, or any situations that may arise over the course of the season, that opportunity is more than available. As the athlete is the person coaches and teammates interact with on a daily basis, the athlete is asked to be an attending member in the meeting, as is Coach Miller and the event specific coach. This allows for transparent communication and explanation to be offered, and ultimately fosters a mature, respectful, professional relationship.
Every moment the coaches, parents, sponsors, extended family, and countless others spend on this program is because these athletes are worth it. The athletes are the reason team numbers have increased, attendance has improved, and team dynamic has grown. The culture of this program has started to change. Outsiders may not believe in what we do within Luers Track and Field, it is time to Make 'Em Believe.
- Head Coach: Jordan Miller (Hurdles, Jumps)
- Assistant Coaches: Nichole Wellman (Distance), JD Maurer (Sprints, Jumps), Matt Brown (Throws), Karly Prichard (Mid-Distance), Jacob Doctor (Distance)
- Practices begin at 3:00 pm and conclude at 6:00 pm. (5:00 pm on Friday's)
- Every practice which takes place after a school day begins with a 30 minute study table session. The study table sessions will take place in the cafeteria and are mandatory for all athletes. Athletes are expected to arrive to study tables fully changed and ready for practice.
- During these study tables, students may complete homework, finish or make-up tests, eat a light snack, leisurely read, or seek treatment from the athletic trainer.
- Headphones will not be permitted during this time.
- Any student wishing to leave study tables to meet with a teacher must have a pass written in their agenda and shown to Coach Miller. There will be a sign out sheet.
- Any tardiness or absence from study table will count as an attendance penalty.

- Due to the nature of track and field, different event groups may conclude at various times. During the first few weeks of practice, most groups practice the entire length; as the season progresses, athletes in certain event groups may begin concluding earlier. Parents and athletes need to maintain consistent communication regarding the conclusion of practice.
- Team buses will be taken to meets. Parent/guardian or student transportation to a meet is prohibited.
- Parent/guardian transportation home from a meet is allowed.
- If a parent/guardian would like to take an athlete home after a meet: print, complete, submit the Transportation Release to Coach Miller at least 24 hours before the meet. There will be NO accepted releases the day of or at the meet. Electronically submitted releases will not be accepted. The athlete is responsible for printing this and submitting it.
- If a parent is transporting the student home from a meet, the athlete must stay until the conclusion of the meet's final event. Students will not be allowed to leave immediately after their events. Every athlete deserves to have their whole team cheering them on, just as the whole team cheered them on during their event(s).
- Athletes not riding the bus home must check out with a coach following the final event before being released to their parent/guardian.
- Athletes can earn a varsity letter in one of three ways:
- Earn an average of 1.75 points per meet per individual. (i.e. 10 meets = 17.5 points earned throughout season)
- *** Due to cancellation, the 2018 season is only 6 meets (Wayne, South Side, Lime City, SAC, Snider, Bellmont); therefore, the number of points required for a varsity letter this season is 10.5 ***
- Individual points are scored in correlation to IHSAA rulings and are only for IHSAA events.
- Points scored in a relay event will be divided by 4.
- Win any event at SAC Championship meet either as an individual or relay.
- Qualify for IHSAA Regional meet either as an individual or relay.
- Attendance is vital to lasting success. Though attendance is expected and mandated, an athlete may acquire a maximum of 10 attendance penalties. Once an athlete reaches the maximum of 10, the athlete is removed from the program and all points accrued during the season are forfeited.
- If an athlete is tardy or absent from a SportsLeader event, scheduled CYO event, or practice, 1 attendance penalty is awarded per missed event/practice.
- If an athlete is tardy, absent, or leaves early from a meet, 2 attendance penalties are awarded and all points accrued during that meet are forfeited.
- If a student is absent from school for more than 4 periods, the athlete may not practice per IHSAA rule and no penalty will be assessed.
- If an athlete needs scheduled re-occurring therapy, athletes may be excused from practice at 4:30 for a scheduled therapy appointment with no penalty.
- NOTE: Athletes are allowed a maximum of 10 attendance penalties. These penalties are no questions asked. If an athlete feels they need a mental/emotional day off (often times the case in mid May when projects, tests, AP tests, exams, etc. are due), athletes do not need to seek permission with a coach. If an athlete has a dentist appointment (those are often made months in advance and difficult to reschedule),or another appointment, the coaches understand. With this understanding from the coaches, athletes and parents should understand 10 attendance penalties equals a maximum of two weeks worth of practice missed. Considering the non-tournament track season is 12 weeks long, this is more than proportionate and appropriate to accommodate an athlete's schedule outside of track and field.
- In the unfortunate event an athlete is injured during practice, the athlete will immediately be permitted/escorted/transported to the athletic trainer, Missy Gumbert. The athletic trainer will determine if the injury requires further medical attention.
- If the injury is severe or requires therapy, it is crucial for communication to be made with the athletic trainer prior to and following therapy appointments. Bishop Luers is blessed to have a full time athletic trainer on site for all practices and meets. She is the person coaches take information from when injuries are involved. Missy is thorough when it comes to follow-ups and up to date diagnosis/prognosis. Regardless of who the medical professional is, even if it is out of the network Luers insurance provides, please follow up. No one wants to make the injury worse and delay/prevent an athlete from competing and participating. Without a consistent line of communication, outcomes are rarely positive.
- NOTE: One of the most common factors leading to injury in track and field is the lack of proper footwear. Closed-toe, athletic shoes (not flip-flops, slides, Crocs, etc) must be worn at all times during practices and meets. Athletes seem to forget that unlike other sports, track runners have one piece of equipment - their bodies. No one would think to play football, volleyball, basketball, or soccer with a deflated ball. In the same fashion, athletes should not run with deflated, un-supportive, unresponsive footwear.
- Bishop Luers track athletes will receive a discount on shoes and apparel from Three Rivers Running Company during a specific 2-week period at the beginning of the season.
- The 2018 team sale will begin Monday, February 12th and conclude Sunday, February 25th.
- Fundraising is a key component to the athletic disciplines at Bishop Luers.
- The 2018 team fundraiser will be the sales of BOGO Pizza Cards and Thermo-Tumblers. More information will be handed out on Monday, February 12th.

- In alliance with the athletic department and the SportsLeader Organization, Bishop Luers Track and Field will be focusing on various virtues, mentoring, ceremonies, and Catholic identity throughout the 2018 season. There are opportunities for families to get involved as well. These opportunities are already on the 2018 calendar and will be explained in the week prior to season, further explained to specific participating groups in the weeks prior to the event.
- Aside from the team shirt, there will be spirit wear available for purchase through a team store.
